IS YOUR SWITCHBOARD HOLDING YOU BACK?

Old ceramic fuse boards were never designed for the electrical loads of a modern home. Air conditioning, EV chargers, induction cooktops, solar inverters — these all put demands on boards that were built in an era when a kettle was about as heavy as it got.

More importantly, ceramic fuses don't trip when overloaded. They keep running until something fails — and by then, it's often too late. Modern switchboards with RCD safety switches detect dangerous current in milliseconds and cut the power before injury or fire can occur.

S+ Electrical Services handles switchboard upgrades across Melbourne's eastern suburbs — Ringwood, Croydon, Mitcham, Blackburn, Box Hill, Doncaster, and beyond. Every upgrade is inspected by a Licensed Electrical Inspector (LEI) and a Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued on completion.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN EVERY UPGRADE

A switchboard upgrade from S+ Electrical is a complete job — not just swapping the box. Here's what's included:

  • Full Assessment — We inspect your existing board, wiring, and load requirements before quoting.
  • Modern Enclosure — Quality DIN rail switchboard with properly labelled circuit breakers.
  • RCD Safety Switches — Fitted to all circuits as required under AS/NZS 3000 and Victorian regulations.
  • Circuit Breakers — Replacing old ceramic fuses with correctly rated MCBs for every circuit.
  • Future-Proofing — Spare ways for solar, EV chargers, or additional circuits down the track.
  • LEI Inspection — All switchboard work is inspected by a Licensed Electrical Inspector on completion.
  • Certificate of Electrical Safety — Issued for every job. Required in Victoria and protects your home insurance.
  • Labelled & Documented — Every circuit clearly labelled so you always know what controls what.

SIGNS YOU NEED A SWITCHBOARD UPGRADE

  • Ceramic or porcelain fuses — If your board uses rewireable fuses, it needs replacing.
  • No safety switches (RCDs) — Victorian regulations require RCD protection. Without it, you're exposed.
  • Tripping breakers — Frequent trips signal your board is undersized for your load.
  • Adding solar panels — Most solar inverters require a modern board with spare capacity.
  • Installing an EV charger — A dedicated circuit and sufficient board capacity are required.
  • Renovating or extending — New circuits for kitchens, bathrooms, or additions need capacity.
  • Buying or selling a home — Buyers inspectors flag old boards. A modern board adds value and confidence.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS — SWITCHBOARD UPGRADES

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

If your home has ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or you're planning to add solar, an EV charger, or do a renovation, a switchboard upgrade is strongly recommended. We offer free on-site assessments — call 0401 749 095 and we'll give you an honest answer.

Is switchboard upgrade work inspected in Victoria?

Yes. All switchboard upgrade work carried out by S+ Electrical is inspected by a Licensed Electrical Inspector (LEI) and a Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued on completion, as required under Victorian regulations.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day. More complex jobs involving sub-mains or meter work may require coordination with your network provider (AusNet) and can take a little longer. We'll advise you clearly when we quote.

Will my power be off during the upgrade?

Yes — there will be a planned outage during the switchboard installation, typically 2–4 hours. We'll give you a clear timeframe in advance so you can plan around it.

Can I add solar or an EV charger to my existing board?

It depends on your current board's capacity and condition. We assess this as part of our free quote process. Many older boards need upgrading before solar inverters or EV chargers can be safely and compliantly connected.

Do you service my area?

We're based in Ringwood East and cover all of Melbourne's eastern suburbs — Ringwood, Croydon, Mitcham, Blackburn, Box Hill, Doncaster, Bayswater, Ferntree Gully, Wantirna, Glen Waverley, Lilydale, and surrounds.
